Morazan's Late PK Propels Men's Soccer to Win Over Madonna
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's soccer team welcomed the WHAC's defending conference champions, the Madonna Crusaders, to Lake Trust Stadium Wednesday evening, and gave the visitors their conference loss of the season.
The two teams traded possession in the midfield, with neither team really creating many opportunities, and when the rain came, the opportunities became fewer, as the slick ball and playing surface wreaked havoc. Both teams went scoreless in the first half.
It looked like the second half would be much of the same, with plenty of fouls, and yellow cards, and neither team really got that clear cut chance to take the lead. Cleary would get the breakthrough in the game's final minute, when Mekhi Harris drew a foul in the penalty area, earning a Madonna red card, and a Cougar penalty kick. Lesman Morazan stepped up to take it, and made sure there was no doubt, as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead, and held on through the final whistle.
Austin Freemire earned his second win of the season, going to 2-0-1, while making two saves on both shots faced. Lesman Morazan's goal was his team leading 9th of the season.
Cleary outshot Madonna 13-9 (6-2 on goal). The two teams combined for 33 fouls, 8 yellow cards, and a red card in the game. Madonna held a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.
The win gives Cleary a 4-3-2 record, 1-0-1 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back at Lake Trust Stadium on Saturday, September 30, when they host the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
