(Lakeland, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team hit the road to Lakeland, Florida Thursday, to take on the receiving votes Southeastern University Fire in a doubleheader.
In Game 1: The Fire jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a RBI single scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. Halle Dargie settled in, and the defense kept the Fire off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth, when Southeastern added another run. The game opened up for the hosts in the sixth, when a double scored two more runs, and an error scored the game's fifth and final run.
Cleary's offense was held in check, as they were held to three hits, coming from Kate Currie, Madi Best, and Maddie Bunkoske.
Halle Dargie suffered the loss, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits in 6 innings pitched.
In Game 2: Game two was all Southeastern, as the Fire once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double. The lead grew to 3-0 in the second after a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk. Thinks went from bad to worse, as the Fire would pile on eight more runs to take an 11-0, and then added one more in the bottom of the fourth, to take the game 12-0.
Sonya Terleckyj would suffer the loss on the mound, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) in 3 innings. The Cougars got hits from Gabrielle Monreal and Jessica Garmen in the game.
The Cougars fall to 2-10 on the season, and will wrap up their spring break trip with a game against the Bethel Pilots and another against the Grace Lancers Friday at the Space Coast Games. First pitch of game one is set for 10:00 AM.
