Four hurlers help Cougars win
(Howell, Mich.) -- The Cleary University baseball team picked up solid outings from all four pitchers Wednesday as the Cougars were able to pick up their second win in a row and third in four games after a 4-1 victory over Bethel University.
Lucas Withers, who will start game two Saturday at Indiana Tech, took to the mound first in a start that was serving more as a bullpen session to keep him fresh. Withers walked two in his one inning while also striking out a pair.
Jack Millerschin picked up the win as he threw five innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out two. Gonzalo Baeza pitched two innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out one with Brett Walcutt earning the save with a perfect inning. Walcutt struck out one.
The Cougars scored twice in the third as both Ryan Kadoguchi and Jesse Fishbaum reached via a hit and the runners advanced 90 feet on an Anthony Lacle sacrifice bunt. The red-hot hitting Aaron Dyke hit a single to right to score the pair to give Cleary the 2-0 until they added a run in the sixth.
Colton Fountain singled to start the frame and was replaced by Zach Hargis on the bases. Hargis swiped second and moved to third on a Daniel Ammons sacrifice bunt and subsequently scored on a Jarod Wierengo groundout.
Bethel picked up their lone run in the eighth inning as the Cougar pitchers kept them off-balance all day.
Cleary (9-15, 2-3 WHAC) will return to action Saturday when they travel to play Indiana Tech in Ft. Wayne in conference play. The Cougars will then play Madonna on Monday afternoon at Lake Trust Stadium. Game time for both series is 1:00 p.m.
