Beres qualifies for NAIA nationals; McCleland sets Cleary record
(Oak Island, North Carolina) -- With a time of 2:38.34, Ethan Beres qualified for the NAIA National Championship after finishing second overall at the Oak Island Marathon this past weekend.
The weather conditions were not optimal as the temperature hovered in the upper 30s with a constant and steady rainfall. With his run, Beres became the first male athlete from Cleary University to qualify for an NAIA National Championship in a running sport. Additionally, Beres became the Cleary University record holder for the marathon.
Abby McClelland etched her name in the record books as well when she clocked a time of 3:57:08, which allowed her to win her age group and set the women’s Cleary University marathon record.
"It was a great day for the Cleary Cougars!" said head coach James Frank. " I am so proud of Ethan and Abby. The sacrifice and training they put into this is incredible. They sacrificed personal time and endured snow and sub-zero temperatures to reach their goals. They represent Cleary well both athletically and, more importantly, as students and people. I am truly blessed and honored to be their coach. I would also like to thank the support crew who gave us water, energy gels and moral support. Thank you Cam Staples, Mike Beres, Christian Beres, Sara Frank, Amber Frank and Brandon Frank."
