(Dearborn, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar hockey team hit the road to Dearborn to take on the nationally ranked UM-Dearborn Wolverines in game one of a WHAC weekend series.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first period, and adding a third goal in the second period before Cleary could get on the board. In the second period, Cam Thomas scored a short-handed goal to cut into the Wolverine lead. UM-Dearborn would answer in the third period to regain the three goal advantage with 15 minutes remaining. Cleary would score one more goal with just under 5 minutes to go, when Jonny Gardiner scored, with an assist from Ben Kozar and Bennett Sheppard.
Liam Kocur made 37 saves on 41 shots on goal in the loss. UM-Dearborn dominated the faceoff matchups, winning 45 out of 63. Cleary had 3 penalties to the Wolverines' 2.
Cleary drops to 3-8 overall, 2-5 in the WHAC. The two teams will meet again Saturday, October 28, when Cleary hosts UM-Dearborn at 140 Ice Den. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 PM.
