(Fraser, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA hockey team hit the road, and were able to complete the series sweep, as the Cougars defeated the Rochester Warriors 12-5 Saturday evening in Fraser.
Cleary used special teams to take the lead early, with Jonny Gardiner scoring a power play goal, with an assist from Bennett Sheppard, followed by a Bennett Sheppard shorthanded goal, with an assist from Devon Campbell, to take a 2-0 lead. Rochester would score late in the first period to cut into the deficit.
The second period was all Cleary, as the Cougars scored five goals, four on the power play, to expand their lead to 7-1. Wes Smith scored a minute into the period, with assists from Cam Thomas and Levi Herauf. Wes Smith scored a power play goal, with assists from Zack Wiener and Ben Gledhow. Bennett Sheppard scored a power play goal, with assists from Zach Eakes and Ben Gledhow. Cam Thomas scored a power play goal, with assists from Justin Reddy and Levi Herauf, and Wes Smith scored his third goal of the game on the power play to close out the period.
The third period was filled with goals by both teams. Bennett Sheppard scored his third goal of the game, with an assist from Zack Wiener. Marc Alexander scored a goal, with an assist from Joe Heinzelman. Justin Reddy scored, with an assist from Cam Thomas, and Marc Alexander scored another goal, with an assist from Wes Smith. The final goal of the game came from Reno Parker, with assists from Wayne Taiman and Joe Heinzelman, to score his first career ACHA D1 goal.
Liam Kocur earned his 6th win of the season, making 18 saves in the game. The game was the first in program history where two Cleary players both scored hat tricks, with Wes Smith and Bennett Sheppard picking up a combined 6 goals, and 2 assists, in the game.
Cleary is now 6-10 overall, 4-6 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action next weekend with a two game series with the Aquinas College Saints. Cleary will host on Saturday, November 18, with the puck dropping at 140 Ice Den at 7:30 PM ET.
