(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA hockey team started off strong, but ultimately dropped a WHAC contest to the visiting Aquinas College Saints at 140 Ice Den Saturday evening.
The Saints were given a delay of game penalty to start the game, and Cleary capitalized, when Billy Simms scored, with an assist from Bennett Sheppard, to give the Cougars an early lead. A pair of Cleary penalties gave the Saints a 5-on-3 later in the period, and Aquinas took advantage, scoring on both power plays to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The two teams traded goals to start the second period, with Cleary scoring by Jonny Gardiner, with an assist from Bennett Sheppard, to cut into the deficit, but the Saints would take advantage of each Cleary penalty committed, as the visitors went 4/4 on the power play in the game, using their special teams to expand the lead to 7-2. Late in the game, Wes Smith scored, with an assist from Reno Parker, for the game's final goal.
Liam Kocur would make 33 saves on 40 shots faced in the losing effort.
Cleary drops to 6-12, 4-8 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action after the Thanksgiving holiday, when they take on Lawrence Tech in a WHAC weekend series.
