(Byron Center, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar hockey team needed a win to claim their highest WHAC season finish in school history, but were unable to get it, as they fell Saturday evening to the Aquinas Saints in Byron Center.
The Saints would strike twice in the opening period, and held a 2-0 lead. Cleary would get on the board in the second period, when Bennett Sheppard scored a power play goal, with an assist from Ben Gledhow, to cut into the Saints' lead. Aquinas would regain the two goal advantage just two minutes later. After another minute of action, Cam Thomas scored Cleary's second goal, with assists from Devon Campbell and Levi Herauf, to make it 3-2. Aquinas would score two more goals in the period to take a 5-2 lead.
Cleary would get their final goal three minutes into the final twenty, when Billy Simms scored, with an assist from Derry MacBeth, cutting Aquinas' lead to 5-3, but the Saints would score two more goals, including an empty net goal, to take the game at 7-3.
Tyler Krasofsky made 34 saves on 40 shots faced in a losing effort.
Cleary finishes the season 16-20, 10-14 in the WHAC. Cleary will be the #6 seed in next week's WHAC tournament, and will play the #3 seed and host UM-Dearborn Wolverines next Friday, February 16.
