(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars ACHA Hockey team took on the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies this weekend. They opened up with a 7-2 win Friday night at Oakland for the first win of the season and followed it up with a 9-3 win at home Saturday evening.
In Game 1 at Oakland:
The Cougars would open the game up with a 4-0 lead after the first period. Devon Campbell got the scoring going for the Cougars with a snipe past the goalie's upper right side. Bennett Sheppard would join the scoring party as he took the puck from the Cougar zone juking out defenders to make it a 2-0 game. Ben Kozar would score his first goal of the season after winning a faceoff and immediately putting it past the Grizzlies goalie. Dylan Tammadge would score the fourth goal of the period on a powerplay. The Cougars and Grizzlies would go silent in the second period with little action. In the third period, an early Cougar penalty allowed the Grizzlies to get one back and make it a 4-1 game. Steven Miller would get this goal back just shortly after making it 5-1 Cougars. Oakland would go on to score one more goal, however, it wasn't enough as the Cougars tacked on two more goals from Dylan Tammadge and Wes Smith to leave it at 7-2.
Nick Schittenhelm (1-0) would make his first start in goal this season for the Cougars and earned the win.
In Game 2 vs Oakland:
The Cougars would come out hot once again scoring 4 goals in the first period. Wes Smith would get the scoring started just 2 minutes into the game. Zane Rydel would get one in the back of the net just shortly after. Justin Reddy and Ben Kozar would score under the 10-minute mark in the period as well. The Cougars would go on to add 4 more goals in the second period to take the game out of hand. Cougar goals would be scored by Zane Rydel, Brett Woolcott, and Collin Kerchoff who scored twice in the period. Oakland would score its first goal in the second period and eventually add two more goals in the third but it wasn't enough. Cougar Bennett Sheppard would add one last goal for them in the third period leaving it to a final score of 9-3 for the Cougars.
Vincent Parent (1-1) would start in goal for the Cougars and make 17 saves on 20 shots.
