(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars ACHA Hockey team opened up the athletic events for homecoming weekend by welcoming the Kent State University Golden Flashes to 140 Ice Den Friday night. They would split the series after a 3-1 win Friday night and a 3-2 loss Saturday night.
In Game 1 vs Kent State:
The Cougars would get things going early taking a 1-0 lead. Steven Miller would score with Dylan Tammadge's assist from a Golden Flashes turnover in their own zone. Both teams would settle into the game going back and forth with shots fired on net. In the second period, Dylan Tammadge found the back of the net giving the Cougars a much-needed insurance goal to make it 2-0. Kent State would respond later in the period making it a 2-1 game heading into the third period. Both teams would once again go back and forth firing shots at the goalies but they stood strong. Looking to tie the game, Kent State would pull their goalie with 2:20 left on the clock for the extra man on the ice. The Cougar's defense would stand strong and get the puck down the ice for Collin Kerchoff to seal the game at 3-1.
Nick Meyering (1-1) would start in goal for the Cougars making 25 saves on 24 shots.
In Game 2 at Kent State:
Both teams would once again be looking to dive into a battle of defense as no team would be able to open the scoring in the first period. Kent State got the game opened up with a goal to put the Cougars down 1-0 in the second period. It wouldn't take long for the Cougars to respond though as Steven Miller would score with assists from Dawson Smith and Dylan Tammadge. Both sides would keep it even for a much anticipated third period. Kent State took the lead and would also add the insurance goal making it a 3-1 game. The Cougars would get one back as Billy Simms found the back of the net to make it 3-2. The Cougars would pull their goalie for the final few minutes of the game to try to take it to overtime but would not be able to score.
Vincent Parent (1-2) would start in goal for the Cougars and make 28 saves on 31 shots
