Game 1
Pikeville
(Pikeville, KY)-- The Cougar baseball team's offense exploded for a combine 17 runs in two games, but it would only be enough to earn one victory, as Cleary split a double-header today with the Pikeville Bears.
In Game 1: Cleary scored the first 9 runs of the game over 7 innings, and it was all started with a Jeremy VanOosterum sacrifice fly that scored Derek Zavala in the 1st inning. Anthony Lacle singled in the 2nd inning to score Jesnel Soto and Dominic Schweitzer to give Cleary a 3-0 lead. In the 5th inning, VanOosterum singled to left scoring Lacle, and two batters later, Nick Koan singled to left to score Jamieson. In the 7th inning, Aaron Dyke scored on a double-steal, and Colton Fountain brought Dyke home to score when he reached on a fielder's choice. Jesnel Soto then singled to right field to score Koan. Pikeville would get one on the board in the bottom of the 7th, but Cleary answered right back when Aaron Dyke singled home Kendall Flaugher. Two batters later, Colton Fountain hit a 2 run home run to left center to score Dyke and give the Cougars a 12-1 lead.
Garrett Larner (1-1) was excellent on the mound, going 6 innings and striking out 5, while not allowing a run. Hunter Weber pitched the final 2 innings, striking out 2, and alloing 1 run on 2 hits.
In Game 2: Cleary once again jumped out to an early lead, this time scoring 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Spencer Jamieson singled to left center to score Derek Zavala. Aaron Dyke reached on an error, which allowed Anthony Lacle to score, and Jamieson was brought home on a wild pitch. Aaron Dyke would eventually score on a balk. Pikeville would settle down, and Cleary would begin to struggle some, as the Bears would score the next 11 runs to take an 11-4 lead into the 7th. Jeremy VanOosterum would single in the 7th to score Zavala, but the Cougar rally would fall short.
Travis Klocek would take the loss, going 3.1 innings, and allowing 6 runs on 5 hits, striking out 3 and walking 3.
The Cougars and Bears will be back in action on Saturday, February 12 for another double-header. First pitch of game 1 will start at 12:00 PM.
