Cornerstone
(Grand Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team moved up their double-header scheduled for Friday to Thursday, and made the trip to Grand Rapids to take on the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles in WHAC action.
In Game 1: Cleary would spot Cornerstone six runs over the first five innings before getting in on the action. Billy Flohr would hit a one out double (Zach Agemak would pinch run), and Jeremy VanOosterum would draw a walk, followed by an Anthony Lacle hit by pitch to load the bases. Nicklas Koan doubled to right center to score Agemak and VanOosterum to cut the deficit to 6-2. The next batter, Jesnel Soto, doubled to left center to score Lacle and Koan, making the score 6-4. Cornerstone would answer with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th to extend their lead to 7-4, and held on without issue in the 7th to secure the game one victory.
Travis Klocek pitched a complete game, allowing 7 R on 7 hits, and struck out 2. Billy Flohr went 2/3, while Aaron Dyke, Nicklas Koan, Jesnel Soto, and Kyle Miazgowicz each had a hit for the Cougars.
In Game 2: Cleary jumped out first in game two, when Aaron Dyke led off the game with a single. Nicklas Koan advanced Dyke with a sacrifice bunt, and Billy Flohr would be hit by a pitch to bring up Jeremy VanOosterum. VanOosterum would single to center to core Dyke. After Anthony Lacle reached on an error, and loaded the bases, Colton Fountain scored Flohr with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Cleary an early 2-0 lead. That lead would be shortlived, as the Golden Eagles answered in the 2nd, and then took control of the game in the 5th inning, as the hosts would score ten runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to secure a shortened 12-2 victory.
Lucas Withers would suffer the loss, allowing 6 R (5 earned) on 9 hits through 4.1 innings. Jeremy VanOosterum went 2/3 with an RBI, while Aaron Dyke, Anthony Lacle, and Jesnel Soto each had one hit for Cleary.
Cleary drops to 18-22, 6-12 in the WHAC, and will next be in action on Saturday, April 23, when they travel back to Grand Rapids for a WHAC double-header with the Aquinas Saints. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
