Cougars Sweep Rochester on Senior Day
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team recognized 16 seniors, and sent them off in style, as they picked up a pair of wins over the visiting Rochester University Warriors at Lake Trust Stadium Saturday afternoon.
In Game 1: After two scoreless innings, Cleary jumped on the board in the bottom of the 3rd. After Anthony Lacle drew a walk, Jeremy VanOosterum hit a home run over the left field fence to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Colton Fountain kept the inning going (Zach Agemak would pinch run) with a single to left. Agemak stole second base, and Ryan Kadoguchi singled through the infield to score Agemak and give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Garrett Larner didn't need any more runs, and though the Cougars gave up one in the 7th, they would hold on to win the game 3-1.
Garrett Larner pitched a complete game, allowing 1 run (0 earned) on 6 hits, while striking out 6 to earn his 5th victory of the season, and 10th of his career. At the plate, Anthony Lacle went 2/2 with 1 r, while Jeremy VanOosterum went 1/3 with 2 RBI.
In Game 2: After Rochester scored in the top of the 1st inning, Cleary would tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd. Nicklas Koan would draw a walk, and advance on a wild pitch. Kyle Miazgowicz would hit a double to right center that scored Koan and tied the game at 1-1. Cleary would add three more runs in the 5th to take more control of the game. After Aaron Dyke drew a leadoff walk, Anthony Lacle hit an infield single. Dyke would come around to score in the next at bat, as Rochester's defense committed a fielding error as Kendall Flaugher attempted to lay a sacrifice bunt. Lacle would score on a wild pitch, and Flaugher advanced to second, giving the Cougars a 3-1 lead. Flaugher would score on another fielding error, and the Cougars left the inning with a 4-1 lead. In the 7th, Jeremy VanOosterum singled, and advanced on an error to second base. Ryan Kadoguchi would also reach on an error, and Cleary would have runners at the corners with two outs. VanOosterum would score on another Warrior fielding error, and gave the Cougars a 5-1 lead. Things would get interesting in the top of the 9th, when Rochester scored three runs to cut the lead to 5-4, but Cleary's Colin Brazil picked up his 5th save of the season, and gave the Cougars the sweep on Senior Day.
Travis Klocek would pick up the win on the mound, going 6 innings, and allowing 1 run (0 earned) on 1 hit, while striking out 5. Anthony Lacle went 2/4 with 1 run, and Aaron Dyke, Kendall Flaugher, Jeremy VanOosterum, Nic Olson, and Kyle Miazgowicz, all had hits for the Cougars.
Cleary finishes the season 22-22, 10-12 in the WHAC.
