(Livonia, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team played a pair of games, but won both in different ways, as the visiting Cougars defeated the host Madonna Crusaders in a crucial WHAC double-header Friday afternoon.
In Game 1: Ben Cerven hit a 1st inning home run to give the Cougars the lead, and Albert Gonzalez hit a pinch hit RBI groundout to score the team's second run, and that was all Nate Raniszewski needed as the Cougars went on to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Raniszewski threw a complete game, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 6. Kristian Scalf went 2/3 at the plate, while five different Cougars picked up a hit apiece.
In Game 2: Cleary's 7-run 2nd inning would be more than enough to help the Cougars earn the game two victory. They would add four insurance runs in the game's final two innings to give Cleary a 12-3 win.
Ben Cerven hit his 2nd home run of the day while going 2/3 with 5 RBI at the plate, while Billy Flohr also went 2/3. Jacob Savina would pick up the win, allowing 3 run on 10 hits in 6 innings of work. Ryan Lieng would pick up the save, throwing the game's final 3 innings and only allowing 1 hit.
Madonna's offense had been averaging double-digit runs in WHAC play coming into the game, and was held to 4 runs total in two games vs. Cleary.
-Cleary improves to 17-14, 6-7 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, April 8, when they welcome the UNOH Racers to Lake Trust Stadium for a WHAC double-header. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
