(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team had the daunting task to facing two of the top three teams in the WHAC this weekend. After winning both games vs. Madonna on Friday, the then first place UNOH Racers came to Lake Trust Stadium for a pair of games.
In Game 1: Spencer Jamieson's two out, bases loaded, 2 RBI single gave the Cougars the lead in the bottom of the 1st. In the 3rd, Ben Cerven expanded the lead after scoring on a balk. In the next inning, Cleary exploded for five runs to take a commanding lead. Ethan Hollister scored after a fielding error was committed by the Racers. The next at bat, Cleary's Marcel Garcia laid a suicide squeeze bunt, and Zach Agemak was able to beat out the attempt at home to score. A Ben Cerven Triple scored Scalf and Garcia, and Cerven would score on another Racer error to make it 8-0. UNOH's only run of the game was scored in the 5th.
Haden Fisk was stellar, throwing a 7-inning complete game, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, and striking out 5.
In Game 2: After Marcel Garcia and Ben Cerven drew walks, Billy Flohr singled to score Garcia, giving Cleary a 1-0 lead. The next batter Sam Browne brought pinch runner Braylon Hughes home, giving the Cougars their final run of the game. Lucas Withers took that 2-0 lead into the 9th, and after letting the leadoff runner on, Colin Brazil was called upon to close out the game. Things got interesting, with the Racers scoring to cut the lead to 2-1. With the tying run on base, UNOH laid a sacrifice bunt down, and the tying run attempted to take third, but Spencer Jamieson and Ben Cerven teammed up to get the out at first, and get the runner at third base for a crucial double-play. Two more singles by UNOH kept the inning alive, but Brazil was able to get out of the jam with a groundout to end the game.
Lucas Withers earned his 4th win of the season, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 4 in 8 innings of work. Colin Brazil picked up his 3rd win. Marcel Garcia, Billy Flohr, and Spencer Jamieson picked up the 3 hits for the Cougars. Ben Cerven saw his 8-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-2 with 2 walks (1 intentional walk).
Cleary is now 20-14, 8-7 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, April 11, when they travel to Grand Rapids to take on the Aquinas Saints. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the Meijer Sports Complex.
