(Rockford, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team struggled to get the bats going early, leading to a two-game split with the host Aquinas College Saints.
In Game 1: The host Saints jumped all over Cleary's pitching, scoring ten runs in the first three innings to take a commanding 10-0 lead. The Saints would add two more runs in the bottom of the 6th before Cleary got on board in the final inning. Lance Wiltse got a one out single, and a Sam Browne pinch hit single down the line brought Wiltse home for the Cougars' only run.
Quinn Foster took the loss, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits in 1 inning. Billy Flohr went 2/2 in the game.
In Game 2: Cleary and Aquinas both had the offense going, as the Cougars would go on to win 12-10 in 9 innings. Aquinas took a 1-0 lead, but Cleary would rattle off six straight runs. Jesnel Soto brought Andrew Piloske home on a single in the 2nd. Billy Flohr hit a two run home run that scored Ben Cerven in the 3rd. Cerven would bring Marcel Garcia home on a sacrifice fly, followed by a two run single from Billy Flohr in the 4th. Aquinas would score seven runs to take the lead in the next two innings before Sam Browne singled to score Kristian Scalf. Albert Gonzalez tied the game at 8-8 on an RBI single, and the Cougars kept the pressure on, loading the bases to score two more runs on walks by Marcel Garcia and Jesnel Soto. Another Ben Cerven sac. fly scored Kristian Scalf to expand the lead to 11-8. Aquinas would add two more runs to narrow the deficit to 11-10, but a Kristian Scalf double scored Jesnel Soto to give the Cougars some breathing room.
Colin Brazil got the 7-out save after Jermey Fuchs came in to get the win, and calmed things down on the mound for the Cougars. Sam Browne led the ofense with a 4/5 day at the plate, while Kristian Scalf, Ben Cerven, Billy Flohr, and Jesnel Soto each chipped in two hits apiece for the Cougars.
