(Pikeville, KY)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team opened up the 2024 season today with a trip down south to Pikeville, Kentucky to take on the University of Pikeville Bears in a doubleheader, splitting the season opener.
In Game 1: The Cougars would get the bats hot early on as Kristian Scalf would lead the game off with a single, followed by a homerun by Brady Alverson. The Cougars would get three more hits in the inning but couldn't get a run across the board leaving it 2-0 after the top of the 1st. Pikeville would quickly respond by putting up one run in the bottom of the 1st and then ultimately tying the game in the bottom of the 2nd. From there the Cougars would take the lead in the top of the 5th inning as Brady Alverson would score on a double hit by Robert Kortas. Ashton Saigh would score a run in the 6th inning on a Pikeville error and Juan Munoz would single for 2 RBI's in the top of the 7th inning to seal the game.
Nate Raniszewski would earn his first victory on the mound this season going 7.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts.
In Game 2: The Cougar's offense would be shut down only scoring 1 run in the 9-inning matchup with the Bears. The lone run would come when Gavin Kempainen scored on a passed ball. The Cougar's defense deflated by having 3 costly errors that would lead to 3 unearned runs.
Marty McDonald would suffer the loss for the Cougars. He finished the day with 5.0 innings pitched, 4 runs, 1 earned run, on 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7. Ryan Lieng would throw 3.0 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.
The Cougars open up 1-1 on the season. They will be back in action on Saturday for day two of their series with a pair of games. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM EST.
