(Lebanon, TN)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team traveled down to Lebanon, Tennessee this weekend to take on Cumberland University. They played the first two games of the four-game series this afternoon.
In Game 1: Cumberland University would start the game by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st but the Cougars would fight back in the top of the 2nd. Spencer Jamieson would score the Cougar's first run on a groundout to the shortstop by Caleb Buda. Ben Cerven would hit a triple in the 3rd inning scoring Marcel Garcia to take a 2-1 lead. In the 5th the Cougars would apply more pressure. An error by the shortstop would allow Marcel Garcia to score on a wild throw. Sam Browne would then double to left field scoring Ben Cerven. Spencer Jamieson would single allowing Sam Browne to score from second base giving the Cougars a 5-1 lead. Cumberland University wouldn't go down without a fight as they would come back and score 6 unanswered runs, leaving the final score 7-5 in favor of the Phoenix.
Nate Raniszewski would start on the mound for the Cougars going 4.2 innings and allowing 4 runs. Jack Westheroff would suffer the loss, his first of the season after allowing 3 runs in 0.2 innings of work.
In Game 2: Dominant pitching by Cumberland University would keep the Cougars bats cold in this one. The Cougars would threaten a few times, their best opportunity in the 3rd inning with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Ben Cerven would unfortunately ground out on a fielder's choice to the shortstop to stop the treat however. Catcher Max Tomaszewski would have a strong showing for the Cougars going 2-3 at the plate, having 2 of the Cougars' 5 total hits.
Marty McDonald would suffer the loss for the Cougars. He would go 5 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits. Noah Bowles would make his season debut throwing 1.0 innings, allowing 4 runs.
The Cougars drop to 2-6 overall on the year. They look to bounce back tomorrow as they take on Cumberland University once again in a double-header. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM EST (11:00 AM CST).
