Cougars Swept by Blue Devils in WHAC Matchup

(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team traveled to Detroit, MI today for a WHAC conference matchup between the Lawrence Tech University Blue Devils. 

In Game 1: The Cougars would strike first and take control of the game in the top of the 2nd inning when Gavin Kempainen singled scoring Spencer Jamieson from third. A throwing error by the shortstop would allow Brice Wesley to score on the play as well giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. The bats would stay hot rolling into the 3rd inning as Sam Browne and Ben Cerven would score on a throwing error by Lawrence Tech's second baseman. This would give the Cougars a 4-0 lead heading into the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 5th with 1 out, pitcher Will Roberts gave up his first hit of the game. The Blue Devils would go on to score 2 runs this inning making it a 4-2 ballgame. In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Blue Devils would make their comeback tying the game 4-4 on a 2-run home run. With two outs in the inning, an error by Ben Cerven would allow a runner from 3rd base to score giving the Blue Devils a 5-4 victory.

Will Roberts would make the start on the mound for the Cougars. He would go 6.0 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Jack Westerhoff would ultimately suffer the loss allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 0.2 innings pitched. 

In Game 2: The Blue Devils would take an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning but the Cougars would respond with runs in the top of the 3rd inning. Ben Cerven would get the scoring started with a single to left field scoring Gavin Kemainen and Marcel Garcia. Albert Gonzalez would then rip a double to right center scoring Sam Browne. Spencer Jamieson would quickly hit a single scoring Albert Gonzalez from second base. Later in the inning, Caleb Buda came in as a pinch hitter and hit a single scoring Spencer Jamieson from second base, giving the Cougars a 5-3 lead. The Cougars would add on another run in the 4th inning when Ben Cerven singled to score Gavin Kempainen. The Blue Devils pitching would then shit down the Cougars the rest of the game and take control of the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning. They would go on to score 8 unanswered runs, for a 12-6 Cougar loss. 

Marty McDonald made the start for the Cougars going 3.1 innings pitched, allowing 5 runs (2 earned). Jacob Savina would suffer the loss on the mound after allowing 5 runs (3 earned) in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Cougars drop to 4-11 overall and 2-2 in WHAC conference play. They will take the field this week against Concordia University on Wednesday at home for a midweek WHAC matchup. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
