(Fort Wayne, IN) -- The Cleary Cougars baseball team took a long bus ride to Fort Wayne, Indiana today to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors. The Cougar would get walked off in Game 1 before dropping Game 2 of the doubleheader.
In Game 1: Indiana Tech would waste no time getting to Cougar pitcher Will Roberts. The Warriors would open the scoring with 4 hits in a row, 3 of them being doubles to bring them to an early 5-0 lead after 2 innings of play. The Cougars would take a minute to get the bats hot as they would go scoreless in the first 3 innings before finding a spark in the 4th. After singles by Andrew Piloske, Spencer Jamieson, and Max Tomeszewski to load the bases, Caleb Buda would step to the plate and rope a bases-clearing double to left field making it a 5-3 ballgame. Indiana Tech would go on to score 1 more run in the bottom half of the inning and one more in the 5th. In the top of the 6th inning looking for some hope, Brice Wesley would drive in a run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Ben Cerven would then reach on an error which allowed Caleb Buda to score from 3rd base. Sam Browne would then hit a ball to right field that would be miss played by the right fielder, allowing Brice Wesley and Ben Cerven to score, tying the game at 7-7. The Warriors would pull away with the win in the bottom of the 7th on a walk-off double leaving the Cougars with an 8-7 loss.
Will Roberts would allow 7 runs in 5.0 innings on the mound today in his start. Josh Lucier (0-1) would ultimately suffer the loss after allowing 1 run in 0.2 innings of work. Andrew Piloske would get on base 3 times this game after going 2-3 with a walk at the plate.
In Game 2: After a walk and single by Gavin Kempainen and Caleb Buda to open up the game, Ben Cerven would hit a double down the left field line to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. With two runners on and no outs to open the 1st inning, the Cougars couldn't find a barrel and would make all 3 outs on strikeouts. The Warriors would respond in the bottom half of the inning with 2 runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Both teams would go scoreless through the 2nd and 3rd innings before the Cougars found some life in the top of the 4th. They would tie the game 2-2 on a Gavin Kemainen single that scored Albert Gonzalez from 3rd base. Cleary would take a 3-2 lead in the 6th when Brice Wesley grounded out to 3rd base but scored Albert Gonzalez. The Warriors wouldn't go down without a fight as they would go on to score 3 runs in the 6th and 4 more in the 7th to give them a 9-3 lead. The Cougars would get a run back in the 8th inning after Gavin Kemapinen singled to score Albert Gonzalez. This would be all the offense left in the tank for the Cougars as they would go on to lose 11-4.
Jacob Savina (0-3) would suffer the loss on the mound after allowing 5 runs in 6.0 innings pitched. Albert Gonzalez would go 2-5 in this game and account for 3 of the Cougars runs.
The Cougars drop to 5-16 overall and 3-7 in WHAC conference play this year. They look to take the field tomorrow as they return to Lake Trust Stadium for a home series with Lourdes University. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
