(Lima, OH) -- The Cleary Cougars baseball team wrapped up their 2023-2024 season today with a doubleheader against the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers.
In Game 1: UNOH would get out to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on a walk followed by a triple. They increased the lead over the Cougars to 3-0 after back-to-back 1-run innings in the 3rd and 4th. In the 5th inning, UNOH would add to the lead with 3 more runs on 3 hits which included a 2-run home run. The Cougars stayed quiet for most of this game until the 7th inning. Albert Gonzalez would double and be pinch-run for by Caleb Buda to start off the inning. Caleb Buda would advance to 3rd base on an error by the 3rd baseman but this would be as far as he would get around the basepaths as the next three batters would become outs to end the ballgame.
Nate Raniszewski (3-6) suffers the loss on the mound after giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in 5.0 innings pitched. Ben Cerven picked up 2 of the Cougars 4 total hits after going 2-3 at the plate.
In Game 2: The Cougars would get the scoring started in this one in the top of the 2nd inning. Sam Browne would lead it off with a double followed by a Spencer Jamieson single that advanced him to 3rd base. Albert Gonzalez would then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Marcel Garcia would single later in the inning scoring Spencer Jamieson and Kristian Scalf making it a 3-0 ballgame. The Cougars would rack up 6 of the team's 10 hits in this inning alone. From there it was all UNOH as they would go on to take a 5-3 lead in the 4th inning with the help of a grand slam. They would then go on to score 4 more runs in the 5th inning making it a 9-3 ballgame. In the bottom of the 7th, UNOH would hit a solo home run, and a 3-run home run to run rule the Cougars 13-3.
Will Roberts (2-3) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing 5 runs on 6 hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Marcel Garcia finished 2-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs as well.
The Cougars finish with a 16-30 record overall on the season and 13-19 in WHAC Conference play. With the two losses on the day, the Cougars were eliminated from WHAC Playoff contention and will finish 10th in the conference.
