Seman's Big Hit and Roberts' Dominance Lead Cleary Cougars to Doubleheader Sweep
(Batavia, OH) -- The Cleary Cougars Baseball team started their weekend trip off today as they traveled down to Batavia, Ohio. They would start a four-game series with the Cincinnati-Clermont Cougars today with a doubleheader.
In Game 1: Both teams settled in quickly with no scoring in the first 2 innings, however, Cleary would threaten to score in both. Cincinnati-Clermont would strike first in the bottom half of the third inning taking a 1-0 lead. Cleary would get some luck in the top half of the fourth inning with two runners on. An error by the Cincinnati-Clermont shortstop allowed both runs to score and Cleary to take a 2-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Cincinnati-Clermont retook the lead scoring 3 runs on 4 hits. After Austin Vincent singled and Gavin Kempainen walked to start off the sixth inning, Brendan Seman would blast a three-run home run to left center and give Cleary back the lead at 5-4. From there the floodgates would open and the Cougars would go on to score 12 total runs in the inning off of six hits. In the seventh inning, Chase Palmer would collect his first career collegiate hit and RBI increasing the lead to 15-4, which would hold as the final score giving Cleary their first win of the 2025 season.
Hector Montilla would get the start for the Cougars but would finish with a no-decision. Nate Raniszewski (1-0) who came in relief would pick up the win on the mound. Brendan Seman, Joey Parinello, and Austin Vincent would all collect 3 hits in this game.
In Game 2: Will Roberts would be lights out for the Cougars on the mound as he would get four strikeouts in the game's first nine outs. Cleary would grab a lead for him in the third inning when Brendan Seman doubled down the left-field line scoring Austin Vincent and Gavin Kempainen. Cleary would increase their lead to 3-0 the following inning when Austin Vincent had a sacrifice bunt to score Braylon Hughes. Cincinnati-Clermont would stick around in the game scoring two runs in the fourth making it a 3-2 ballgame. It would be all Cleary from there as they would add on three more runs in the sixth inning with RBIs from Conner Boone, Austin Vincent, and Gavin Kempainen. Bryce Wesley would join in on the scoring in the seventh inning with a home run to left field, his first of the season. Ryan Lieng would come in to pitch in the seventh inning for Cleary and shut it down giving the Cougars a 7-2 victory.
Will Roberts (1-1) would get the start for Cleary and finish with a stat line of 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 10 SO. His 10 strikeouts are a new career-high from when he had 6 strikeouts in three separate games last season.
The Cougars improve to 2-4 on the season with the doubleheader sweep. They will finish their four-game series with Cincinnati-Clermont tomorrow with another doubleheader. The first game will start at 12:00 PM with the second game starting around 3:00 PM.
