Cougars Rally in Game 1 and Cruise to Victory in Game 2 for Weekend Sweep in Batavia
(Batavia, OH) -- The Cleary Cougars Baseball team finished up their weekend trip in Batavia, OH today. They took on the Cincinnati-Clermont Cougars once again for a Sunday doubleheader.
In Game 1: Cincinnati-Clermont came into the game looking for revenge from yesterday's doubleheader sweep. They would jump out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of play which included two solo home runs in the third inning. Cleary would get on the scoreboard in the fourth when Jaun Munoz singled through the right side of the infield scoring Bryce Wesley. They would add a second run in the fifth when Gavin Kempainen scored on a passed ball. Cincinnati-Clermont felt the pressure start to build and looked to increase their lead. They'd go on to increase their lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning scoring 3 runs making it a 6-2 ballgame. With Cleary's momentum looking like it would come to a halt, they would explode for a seven-run sixth inning. Juan Munoz kicked things off with an RBI single that scored Chase Palmer. After Brodie Mackay scored on a wild pitch, Hector Montilla would come through with a huge pinch hit 2 RBI single. Gavin Kempainen, Brendan Seman, and Brodie Mackay would get RBIs in the inning as well. Marty McDonald would take over on the mound in the bottom half of the sixth inning and shut down Cincinnati-Clermont from there leaving Cleary with a 9-6 comeback victory.
Jacob Savina (1-0) would pick up his first win of the season on the mound. Marty McDonald came into the game in relief and picked up his first save of the season throwing 2.0 innings and allowing 2 hits.
In Game 2: Cleary would come firing out of the gates scoring three runs in the first inning. Gavin Kempainen got the game started with a single. Brendan Seman would score him on a double which a Joey Parinello two-run home run would then follow. The Cougars would pick up two more runs in the third inning when Brodie Mackay blasted a 2-run home run giving them a 5-0 lead. Brodie Mackay would later lead off the fifth inning with a triple and score Brady Alverson singled up the middle. In the sixth inning, Brodie Mackay doubled to left center scoring Chase Palmer to increase Cleary's lead to 7-0. Cleary added two more runs in the seventh inning off of a Gavin Kempainen and Chase Palmer RBI single. Brendan Seman was lights out on the mound shutting down Cincinnati-Clermont going 1-2-3 in the seventh inning and sending Cleary home with a 9-0 win.
Brendan Seman (1-1) got the start for the Cougars and threw a complete game shutout. He finished with a final stat line of 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 4 SO. Brodie Mackay went 3-4 at the plate with a double, triple, and home run, just a single away from the cycle.
The Cougars improve to 4-4 on the season and look to next weekend where they will take on the Union Commonwealth University Bulldogs. The four-game series will start on Friday, February 28th with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM with game two expected to start around 3:00 PM.
