(Howell, MI) -- The Cleary Cougars Baseball team took on the University of Rio Grande Red Storm this afternoon for a weekday non-conference doubleheader.
In Game 1: Rio Grande started out the game with a bang scoring four runs in the first inning. In the second inning, the Cougars would get on the board when Jake VanderHaar hit an infield single that scored Joey Parinello. The Cougar comeback built in the fourth inning as the Cougars scored 4 runs to take a 5-4 lead. Peyton Mullins scored the first run when the catcher tried to catch Brice Wesley stealing second base. Brice Wesley later advanced on a passed ball and then scored on another one. Austin Vincent would then drive in Keegan Hutchinson on an RBI double. Austin Vincent would advance to third base on a throwing error by the pitcher and then would score when Gavin Kempainen reached safely on a bunt single. Rio Grande would threaten to score in the fifth inning and get the bases loaded with one out. Ryan Lieng would come into the ballgame for the Cougars and get an inning-ending double play. He would finish off the rest of the game throwing the final 2.2 innings leading the Cougars to a 5-4 victory.
Marty McDonald got the start for the Cougars on the mound. Nolan Green (1-0) would pick up his first Cougar win throwing 2.0 innings and striking out 3. Ryan Lieng picked up his first save of the season as well.
In Game 2: The Cougars would get on the board first in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Austin Vincent would come up clutch with a bases-clearing double to right-center to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. They would build that lead to 4-0 on the next inning when Joey Parinello homered to left field. Rio Grande would get one back in the fourth inning but the Cougars bats wouldn't stop. In the bottom half of the inning, they would add five more runs. Conner Boone kicked the scoring off with a single that scored Austin Vincent and Gavin Kempainen. Conner Boone later scored on a groundout. Juan Munoz would come through in a pitch-hit situation and collect an RBI. Jake VanderHaar finished off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to right field that scored Brady Alverson. Rio Grande would look to comeback and scored three runs in the sixth inning, however, it was not enough as the Cougars hung on to the lead for a 9-4 victory.
Jacob Savina (3-1) picked up the win on the mound with a final stat line of 4.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, and 4 SO. Joey Parinello's home run was his third on the season.
The Cougars are now 10-8 on the season and will begin WHAC Conference play this Friday as they travel to Grand Rapids, MI to take on the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
