(Howell, MI) -- The Cleary Cougars Baseball team opened up the weekend with a WHAC Conference doubleheader against the Indiana Tech Warriors this evening. Game 1 had a small lightning delay, while Game 2 was able to be played under the lights.
In Game 1: Indiana Tech kicked things off in the second inning with an RBI double that gave them a 1-0 lead. They added more to their lead with five more runs in the fourth and an additional run in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. The Cougars were able to get runs back in the fifth inning to decrease the Warriors' lead. With runners on second and third, Braylon Hughes was able to score on a groundout. Brendan Seman followed this up with a double down the right field line that scored Austin Vincent from third base. Joey Parinello then singled to right field to score Brendan Seman, making it a 7-3 ballgame. After a small lightning delay, the Cougars were able to pick up another run in the sixth to make it a 7-4 game. The Warriors kept the offensive pedal on the gas and picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh. Joey Parinello singled, and Brodie Mackay kicked things off in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on second and third and one out, the Cougars would go down swinging, unable to rally back for a final score of 9-4 in favor of the Warriors.
Hector Montilla (1-3) started for the Cougars and would receive the loss after allowing 6 runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Brodie Mackay finished 3-3 with a double at the plate.
In Game 2: Indiana Tech kicked things off right where they left off in Game 1 and would score one run in the top of the first inning. The Cougars got right back into the ballgame in the bottom half of the inning when Hector Montilla tripled to left center, scoring Gavin Kempainen and Brendan Seman. Hector Montilla later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Cougars a 3-1 lead after one inning of play. Both pitchers settled into the game as innings two through five would go scoreless. Indiana Tech rallied back in the sixth, scoring two runs to tie the game at 3-3. The Cougars regained the lead in the seventh. Jake VanderHaar hit an infield single and then was substituted for Braylon Hughes as a courtesy runner. He would steal second and third base before Gavin Kemapinen singled to right field to score him. Indiana Tech would not give in though, and went on to score three runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to take an 8-4 lead. The Cougars were able to score one run in the ninth on a throwing error, however, it would not be enough as they would get shut down with an 8-5 loss.
Haden Fisk got the start on the mound, throwing 5.0 innings pitched, allowing 3 runs, and striking out 9 batters. Marty McDonald (1-1) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing 3 runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
The Cougars are now 14-14 overall on the season and 4-4 in WHAC Conference play. The Cougars hit the field again on Sunday, March 30 as they take on the Siena Heights Saints in a home doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
