(Howell, MI) -- The Cleary Cougars Baseball team welcomed the Lawrence Tech University Ble Devils to Lake Trust Stadium this afternoon.
In Game 1: Both teams would be kept off the board through the first two innings, but the Cougars were the ones to break the scoring open in the third. Brendan Seman walked with the bases loaded, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The threat was shut down there, and Lawrence Tech would take the momentum shift with them, as they would score three runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead over the Cougars. The Blue Devils added another run in the fifth, however, the Cougars got it right back when Brendan Seman hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning that scored Gavin Kempainen. The Cougars would rally back in the sixth and tie the ballgame with two runs in the inning. Gavin Kempainen singled up the middle that scored Joeseph Miller. Conner Boone then singled to score Braylon Hughes. The Blue Devils would then score two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead back. Looking for one last push, Ryan Rose doubled that scored Peyton Mullins, making it a one-run ballgame. Lawrence Tech was able to shut the threat down though, and end the Cougars' winning streak with a final score of 6-5.
Will Roberts got the start for the Cougars on the mound with a final stat line of 6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R (2 ER), 3 BB, and 5 SO. Ryan Rose finished 3-3 with one walk, one run scored, and one RBI at the plate.
In Game 2: Lawrence Tech would come out and get to Cougar pitcher Haden Fisk right away, scoring two runs in the first inning. Haden Fisk settled in from there, going the next six innings without allowing a run. The Cougars got one run back in the third when Austin Vincent doubled to score Braylon Hughes. In the fourth, Austin Vincent singled to score Ryan Rose and tie the game at 2-2. Gavin Kempainen then laid down a perfect bunt with two outs and scored Braylon Hughes to take the lead. The Cougar lead increased to 4-2 in the fifth when Brendan Seman tripled to left center and then scored on Joey Parinello's single. The Cougar lead increased once again to 5-2 in the seventh when Brodie Mackay doubled down the right field line and Conner Boone scored. Lawrence Tech would stay in the game though, and score two runs in the eighth inning, making it a 5-4 ballgame. The Cougars would get two outs in the top of the ninth, however, a Blue Devil single was able to score two runs and take the lead over the Cougars. The Cougars would go down with no real threat in the bottom of the ninth as the Blue Devils went on to win 6-5 over the Cougars.
Haden Fisk got the start for the Cougars and finished with a final stat line of 7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, and 7 SO. austin Vincent would finish 3-4 with 2 RBIs at the plate.
The Cougars are now 21-19 overall and 11-9 in WHAC Conference play. They look forward to a rematch with the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Friday, April 18. The doubleheader will be on the road at Jimmy John's Field in Utica, MI, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
