Men's Basketball Drops WHAC Matchup With Aquinas After Second Half Comeback
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's basketball team held a halftime advantage for the second straight game, but were unable to hang on for the program's first ever victory, as they fell to the visiting Aquinas College Saints 84-80 Tuesday evening in Lansing.
A balanced attack from the Cougars, mixed with some solid defense, helped the hosts build a 37-29 halftime lead. That lead would grow to 11 points in the second half, before a Saints run cut into the deficit. Aquinas would turn up the pressure defensively, forcing the Cougars to miss some shots, and the lead would exchange hands. Forced to foul late, Aquinas would make their free throws, and hold on for the victory.
Cleary had five players reach double figures, led by Jaylen Cole-Williams who had a team high 16 points and 3 assists. Case Conley added 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Tim Kewley had a monster 12 points and 6 blocks off the bench. AJ Hess was near perfect from the floor, shooting 4-6 (3-5 from 3) to score 11 points, and Bennie Crenshaw Jr. continued to play well, chipping in 11 points and 7 assists.
Cleary outshot the Saints from the floor, as they held a 52.1%-50.9% advantage. Aquinas outrebounded the Cougars 29-22 in the game.
Cleary drops to 0-6 overall, 0-3 in the WHAC. The Cougars will look to earn their first win this Saturday, when they host the Siena Heights Saints at Gannon Gymnasium. The game is set to begin at 7:30 PM.
