Men's Basketball Stumbles at Cornerstone
(Gradn Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's basketball team started off strong, but the Cornerstone Golden Eagles shot lights out in the second half to pull away, as the Cougars suffered a road WHAC defeat Wednesday evening in Grand Rapids.
Cleary came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, as Chris Williams, Tim Kewley, and Bennie Crenshaw Jr. each made jump shots to help the Cougars build an early 6-3 lead. Jaylen Cole-Williams would get into the act, and Crenshaw would hit another three, giving Cleary a 12-4 advantage. The Golden Eagles would climb back into the game, and took the lead with 12:42 to play in the first half, but a Brockton Kohler three pointer gave the Cougars a one point lead. The two teams would jostle for an advantage, and Cornerstone would get their footing first, as they built a five point lead going into the half with Cleary trailing 34-29.
After holding the Golden Eagles to 36% shooting in the first half, and 14% from behind the arc, Cornerstone would turn things around in the second half, quickly building a double-digit advantage, and building their largest lead of the game behind red-hot shooting. The Golden Eagles would only miss 11 shots in the second half, shooting 69%, and 52% from behind the arc, as they built a 30-point lead to take the game.
Cleary would have three players reach double-figures, with Tim Kewley leading the way with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Jaylen Cole-Williams and Brockton Kohler each scored 10 points, while Bennie Crenshaw Jr. added 9 points, and Chris Williams had 8 points.
Cleary falls to 2-22, 2-17 in the WHAC, and will be back at Gannon Gymnasium on Saturday at 3:00 PM to take on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines.
