Men's Basketball Unable to Keep Up With Crusaders
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars men's basketball team dug themselves into an early hole, and were unable to get out, as the visiting Madonna University Crusaders topped the Cougars 89-76 Wednesday evening in Lansing.
Madonna built an early 5-0 lead before Cleary would get on the board. Cleary would hang tough with the WHAC's regular season champs, with Madonna up 18-16 halfway through the first half. The Crusaders would make some plays, and built a double-digit lead with four minutes to play in the first half, with the lead growing to as many as 17 points. Cleary would respond, and cut into the lead at the end of the half, but still trailed 44-31 at the break.
The second half was a back and forth affair, with Madonna unable to pull away, and Cleary unable to go on the run they needed to get it close. The Cougars would get the deficit to ten points, but Madonna made the plays down the stretch, and held on to win by 13.
Bennie Crenshaw Jr. led CU with 20 points. Brockton Kohler would have 18 points off the bench, while Chris Williams tallied 11 points and 4 rebounds.
Cleary drops to 3-23, 3-18 in the WHAC. The Cougars will finish their season Saturday with a home game vs. the Lourdes Gray Wolves. The game is set to begin at 3:00 PM.
