(Detroit, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's basketball team had nine different players find the official scorebook, but it wouldn't be enough as the Detroit Mercy Titans pulled away to win at Calihan Hall Monday evening.
Detroit would score the first five points of the game before AJ Hess got things going for the Cougars. After a pair of free throws for Detroit, Chris Williams hit a jumper to make it 7-4. A 6-0 Titan scoring run would expand the lead, but the Cougars would respond. Tyree Jones hit a layup, followed by an Amare Slaughter made three pointer, and then Levi McKenzie would score six straight points to tie the game at 15-15 with 11:00 to play in the first half. This spurt woke up the Titans, who would finish the half on a 25-13 run, to take a 40-28 lead into the half.
The second half would start with another Titan run, this time the hosts would go on a 12-3 run to open up the game, and eventually make the deficit too much to overcome.
Levi McKenzie would have 9 points and 5 rebounds, while teammate Amare Slaughter would also have 9 points, both team highs. AJ Hess would hit two more threes in the game en route to his 8 points.
Cleary was outrebounded 53-24 in the game, while committing 13 turnovers to UDM's 10.
Cleary remains 1-1 on the year, and will be back in action this Friday, November 8, when they take on the IU-Northwest RedHawks as part of the Rochester Christian University Faith Works Classic. The game is set to begin at 7:30 PM at Garth Pleasant Arena.
