Golden Eagles Pull Away from Men's Basketball
(Grand Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's basketball team was in West Michigan to take on WHAC perennial power Cornerstone Saturday afternoon, and the host Golden Eagles pulled away in the second half to earn the victory by a score of 73-46
Tyree Jones would tie the ballgame in the early goings to get the Cougars on the scoreboard. After Cornerstone retook the lead, Chris Williams knocked in a jumper to once again tie the ballgame up at 4-4. Cornerstone would go on a 5-0 run, but a Chris Williams free throw, and then a layup by Williams would cut the score to 7-9 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Another 5-0 run by the Golden Eagles made the score 14-7, but Chaz Cobbs Jr. would make a nice play to get to the basket and keep the deficit at five points. After Cornerstone scored, Cobbs Jr. would score on Cleary's next possession, once again keeping the Cougars within striking distance. The Golden Eagles would get hot at the right time, and outscored the Cougars 15-7 to finish the half, as the home team led 32-18 at the break.
The second half would favor the Golden Eagles, as Cornerstone would expand their lead to nineteen points just six minutes into the half. The deficit would be over twenty just a minute later, as Cornerstone kept their foot on the gas, preventing the Cougars from making a run to get back into the ballgame.
Tyree Jones led CU with 10 points and 3 rebounds. Chris Williams and Chaz Cobbs Jr. each had 8 points for the Cougars.
Cleary falls to 2-9 overall, 1-4 in the WHAC. The Cougars will return to Gannon Gymnasium on Wednesday, December 18, when they host the Rochester Christian Warriors at 7:30 PM.
