(Georgetown, KY)-- The Cleary Cougars men's soccer team finished their non-conference schedule Sunday afternoon, as they took on the Georgetown College Tigers in Georgetown, Kentucky.
The Tigers came into the game with a 4-0-2 record, and showed quickly why they were going to be a difficult matchup. After failing to clear a ball from the goal mouth in the 4th minute, the ball fell to the foot of a Tiger player who tapped it in for an early 1-0 lead. Just seven minutes later, Cleary helped out their opponents with an own goal to make it 2-0, and five minutes later, Georgetown made it 3-0. The Tigers would add one more goal in the final minutes of the opening half to take a 4-0 lead into the break.
Cleary would do better in the second half, but it would be Georgetown who broke through again, scoring their fifth and final goal in the 69th minute of action.
"Not the ideal scoreline today," said Cougar head coach Dan Bulley. "The second half performance showed character, and for that I was happy. Overall, it was a successful weekend away for us in our final games before conference play starts."
Georgetown outshot the Cougars 14-2 in the game, with Cleary's shots coming from Liam Coyle and Elijah Selembe, but neither were on target. Austin Freemire made his first career start in goal, and suffered the loss, as he allowed 5 goals on 8 shots, while making 3 saves. Georgetown held the corner kick margin at 8-2, and committed 6 fouls to Cleary's 4 in the game.
Cleary will take their 2-3-2 record into WHAC play next weekend, as they host the Rochester University Warriors at Lake Trust Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
