Cougar Softball Drops Game to Taylor on First Game of Trip South
(Williamsburg, KY)-- The Cleary Cougars softball team opened up their Spring Break road trip with a game that was originally supposed to be played in Oneida, Tennessee, but the weather caused the game to be moved to the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The Cougars took on one of the top teams from the Crossroads League, the Taylor Trojans.
After a scoreless 1st inning for Cleary, Taylor got on the board with two runs after three straight hits to take an early 2-0 lead. Cleary would respond in the top of the 2nd, when Molly Wheeler reached first base on a bunt hit, followed immediately by a throwing error that scored Maddie Campbell to cut into the Trojan lead. The next batter was Kate Currie who singled right up the middle to score Wheeler and tie the game.
Taylor led off the next half inning with a solo home run, and then scored three more runs to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Cleary would score one more, in the top of the 5th, when Izzy Easton grouned out, but brought home Osheiauna Phifer to make it a 6-3 game, but the responded with four more runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 10-3 lead, a score that would hold the rest of the way.
Allison Lesonsky took the loss on the mound, allowing 8 runs on 11 hits in 4 innings of work. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, when they play two in Oneida, TN, when they take on Huntington and Rio Grande. Game 1 starts at 11:00 AM.
