Team Stats
Rio Grande
(Oneida, TN)-- The Cleary Cougars softball team was supposed to play their first game of the day at 11:00 AM, but frost, and then soggy field conditions forced the games to be delayed almost four hours. Once play was allowed to resume, the Cougars would split their two games.
In Game 1 vs. Huntington: Both teams took some time getting into the action, as neither team was able to rally enough for any runs until the 4th inning, when Molly Wheeler laid a suicide squeeze sac. bunt that scored Susie Bielecki to make it 1-0. With a one run lead, the Cougars would score some insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th, as Maddie Campbell doubled to right field to bring Sarah Cassidy home. Two batters later, Kate Currie singled to right field, bringing Izabell Estes and Campbell home to make it 4-0. Sonya Terleckyj would only need the one run, as she went the complete 7 innings, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 3 to improve her record to 1-1 on the season. Osheiauna Phifer went 2/3 on the day, while Maddie Campbell went 3/3 with 1 RBI and 1 R.
In Game 2 vs. Rio Grande: One of the best teams in the country flexed their muscles, as the receiving votes Red Storm scored in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Cleary would get on the board, when Alex Pace scored on a Mia Rzepka fielder's choice to cut into the Red Storm lead. Rio Grande would add two more in the 4th to expand their lead to 4-1. After Susie Bielecki doubled, Grace Pasterik pinch ran, and would score on a passed ball to make it 4-2. Rio Grande exploded for seven runs in the top of the 5th to make it 11-2, before the game would be called. Alex Pace went 3.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits, to take the loss. Cleary had 4 hits in the game, with Osheiauna Phifer, Maddie Campbell, Susie Bielecki, and Alex Pace each having one a piece.
The Cougars are now 4-4, and will conclude their play in the Bear Creek Tournament tomorrow, when they take on the University of the Cumberlands at 10:00 AM, and IUSB at 12:00 PM.
