(Ann Arbor, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team hit the road to Ann Arbor to take on the Concordia Cardinals in a WHAC double-header, but were unable to come home with a win, as they fell in both games Saturday afternoon.
In Game 1: Cleary would score first to start the game, after Izzy Easton singled home Osheiauna Phifer to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Concordia would score five in the bottom of the 2nd, and two more combined in the 3rd and 4th to take an 8-0 lead. Cleary would get another run in the top of the 5th. Susie Bielecki led off the inning with a double, and a Kate Currie single would advance Bielecki to third base. An error by Concordia's centerfielder scored Bielecki from third to make the score 8-2. The Cardinals would add one more run in the bottom of the 6th to take a 9-3 lead, and would hold on through the final out.
Sonya Terleckyj would take the loss, allowing 5 R (3 earned) on 4 hits through 1.2 innings. Alexis Beeson pitched the final 4.1 innings of the game. At the plate, Osheiauna Phifer, Susie Bielecki, and Kate Currie each had 2 hits apiece.
In Game 2: Concordia would build a 3-0 lead over the first five innings, but Cleary would score in the top of the 6th to cut into the lead. Courtney Ture led off the inning with a single. After Ture advanced on a groundout, Kate Currie continued to get hits, as she doubled to right center to score Ture. Three batters later, Jenna Wagenschutz singled to center to score Currie and cut the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Concordia responded with five runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a commanding 8-2 lead, and would hold on to that lead for the final out.
Allison Lesonsky would take the loss pitching, going 5.2 innings and allowing 8 R on 9 hits. Cleary's five hits came from, Courtney Ture, Kate Currie, Jenna Wagenschutz, Haley Whittecar, and Sarah Cassidy.
Cleary drops to 11-21 overall, and 0-4 in WHAC play. The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday, April 3, when they travel to Ann Arbor to take on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines at UM's Alumni Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
