Blue Devils Power Past Cougars in Game 1; Game 2 Suspended
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars softball team tried to play a pair of WHAC games against the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils, but the weather would only allow one game to be played.
In Game 1: Things started off exactly how the Cougars drew things up, as Cleary jumped on the board for seven runs in the first two innings. Osheiauna Phifer led off the game with a single and a stolen base, and Sarah Cassidy singled Phifer home in the very next at bat. One batter later, Izzy Easton doubled home Cassidy to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. After a fly out advanced Easton to third base, Susie Bielecki doubled and brought Easton home to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. After Merecedes Cole doubled to put runners on second and third (Wagenshutz would pinch run for Cole), Mia Rzepka tripled to score Bielecki and Wagenschutz and give the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Grace Pasterik would draw a walk, and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position, and Maddie Campbell drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Osheiauna Phifer would reach on a fielder's choice that scored Rzepka, and the final run of the inning. In the 2nd, Kate Currie hit a one out double, and was advanced to third base on a ground out to bring up Jenna Wagenshutz. Wagenshutz would single to the shortstop, but Currie was able to score and gave Cleary a 7-0 lead. The game would take a turn, as Lawrence Tech rallied in the third to score five runs, and took the lead in the 6th at 9-7. The Blue Devils would add two more insurance runs in the 7th, and held on to win 11-7.
Alexis Beeson would take the loss in relief, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Sarah Cassidy and Kate Currie each had two hits for the Cougars.
Game 2 is suspended and will be played at a later time if the game is relevant for postseason play. The makeup date will be announced at a later time.
