Rio Grande
(Williamsburg, KY)—The Cougars wrapped up their weekend at the Bear Creek Tournament this morning with a game against Rio Grande, followed by a game against Indiana South Bend.
Game 1 vs. Rio Grande:
Cleary stayed in it until the end, but Rio Grande pulled away late in an 11-3 victory. The game was tied at three with Rio Grande batting in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run. The Cougars struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Rio Grande, giving up 11 runs.
Caitlynn Duffey took the loss for Cleary and lasted three and a third innings, allowing seven hits and nine runs while striking out three. Duffey, Mckenzie Latshaw, Sarah Cassidy, Grace Pasterik, and Mia Rzepka all had one hit to lead the Cougar offense.
Game 2 vs. IUSB:
Despite allowing three runs in the sixth inning, the Cougars defeated Indiana South Bend 5-4. Cleary got things moving in the second inning when Sonya Terleckyj hit a double to bring in Maddie Bunkoske. Cleary pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning. In the third Maddie Campbell doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, Maddie Bunkoske singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run, and Mia Rzepka singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
Terleckyj earned the win for Cleary University Cougars Varsity. Terleckyj went seven innings, allowing four runs on two hits, striking out four and walking one. Grace Pasterik, Kate Currie, Campbell, Bunkoske, Rzepka, and Terleckyj each collected one hit to lead the Cougars.
Cleary is now 3-6 on the season. The softball team will be back in action in March as they travel down to Cocoa Beach for the Spring Space Coast Games.
