(Melbourne, FL)—After a day off from play, Cougar softball is back at the USSSA Space Coast Complex and coming off of a double header sweep from Tuesday, the 7th of March. They played two today with one game starting at 9am and the other at 2pm.
In Game 1 vs. St. Francis (Ind.): The Cougars added another win to their schedule taking St. Francis into extra innings. The game was tied 1-1 going into extra innings—with international tie-breaker rules—with Mia Rzepka starting the inning on second. Gabby Monreal singled to move Rzepka to third, followed by Grace Pasterik with a walk to load the bases for Sarah Cassidy. Cassidy singled to right, scoring Rzepka and giving the Cougars the lead. This was enough to hold St. Francis from scoring and giving Sonya Terleckyj the chance to secure the win for the Cougars.
Terleckyj's record improves to 4-4 after todays win. The Cougar's first run was scored after Izzy Easton earned a hit in her pinch hit at bat, tying up the game for Cleary in the top of the seventh. Maddie Bunkoske led the Cougar offense going 2-for-4 on the day.
In Game 2 vs. WVU Tech: The Cougars were unable to keep the momentum going and fell to the Golden Bears 4-2. Halle Dargie threw a complete game allowing 8 hits. Dargie and the Cleary defense kept the game tied until the top of the 7th when the Golden Bears added two runs to take the lead.
The Cougars collected 8 hits against WVU and their two runs were scored on hits from Sarah Cassidy and Kate Currie, having one RBI each. Along with Cassidy and Currie, Grace Pasterik, Gabby Monreal, Jenna Wagenschutz, Maddie Campbell, and Mia Rzepka all collected one hit each.
The Cougars will play their last two games of their spring trip tomorrow at 9 & 11:30 am before heading back to Howell.
Highlight of the Day: Sonya Terleckyj reached her 100th strikeout of her career as a Cougar only 18 games into her junior season.
