(Caledonia, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team hit the road to West Michigan, and took on the Davenport University Panthers JV softball team in the team's final doubleheader before conference play begins this weekend.
In Game 1: The Cougars jumped all over Davenport in the early goings, scoring eight runs before the Panthers were able to get on the board. Gabrielle Monreal led off the game with a walk, and scored two batters later when Kate Currie doubled her home. Cleary would add three more in the top of the third, when Mia Rzepka, Kate Currie, and Arianna Harden all scored. Cleary would add a pair of runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, to take an 8-0 lead. Davenport would respond with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and another in the sixth, but it would be too little to late as Halle Dargie closed out the game to earn another win on the mound.
Kate Currie and Jenna Wagenschutz had two hits each for the Cougars, while, Arianna Harden had 3 RBI. Halle Dargie earned the win with 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 6.
In Game 2: Davenport would strike first after a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Cougars would respond. Cleary took the lead in the third when Mia Rzepka and Kate Currie were brought home. Gabrielle Monreal, Maddie Bunkoske, and Grace MacCaughan each scored in the fourth to blow the game open for the Cougars, taking a 5-1 lead. Davenport would cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth, making it 5-2, but Cleary scored twice in the top of the seventh to take the game 7-2.
Sonya Terleckyj picked up another win in a complete game effort, as she allowed 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 7. Mia Rzepka, Kate Currie, Jenna Wagenschutz, and Grace MacCaughan all had multi-hit games to lead the Cleary offense. Currie would also have 2 RBI.
The Cougars improve to 5-11, and will open up WHAC play on Sunday when they travel to Birmingham Groves High School to take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM. *Cleary is the home team on the scoreboard for the LTU doubleheader*
