Softball's Season Ends With Heartbreaking Loss in WHAC Tournament
(Sylvania, OH)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team scratched and clawed their way back into the game against the UNOH Racers, but ultimately saw their season come to an end in extra innings Thursday afternoon at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
The Racers jumped out to an early lead, thanks to a two run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cougars would answer in the second inning, when Arianna Harden doubled home Maddie Bunkoske to cut the lead in half. UNOH regained the two run advantage in the bottom of the second, but Cleary would storm back to tie the game in the third inning. Mia Rzepka would get on with a two out single, and scored on a Kate Currie single. Currie would score on a throwing error in the next at bat, and the game would be tied 3-3.
The game remained tied the rest of regulation, and extra innings would be required. After Cleary was unable to advance Jenna Wagneschutz in the eighth, UNOH would load the basesin the bottom half of the inning. A line drive past a diving Jessica Garmen got the ball into the outfield, and allowed the winning walk-off run to score.
Haley Ludwig would suffer the loss, allowing 1 run on 4 hits in 5.2 innings, while adding three strike outs. Cleary had hits from Mia Rzepka, Kate Currie, and Arianna Harden in the game.
The Cougars finish the season 14-27.
