(Ave Maria, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team was back in action Sunday, as they traveled to southwestern Florida to play the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University in a doubleheader.
In Game 1: A Mia Rzepka single and a stolen base would get the Cougars into scoring position in the top of the third inning. Maddie Bunkoske would single to score Rzepka, and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The Gyrenes tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth, and the score would remain tied heading into the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, Jenna Wagenschutz led off the inning with a double to left field. After a sacrifice bunt by Ashleigh Tatara advanced Wagenschutz to third, Lauren Gannon laid a beautiful bunt down the first base line to score the go-ahead run, and gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead. AMU would get a leadoff double to start the bottom of the sevent. After getting that runner out on a fielder's choice, the Gyrenes scored the tying run on a triple, and scored the winning run on a double in the next at bat, walking-off the Cougars by a 3-2 score.
Haley Ludwig threw a complete game in a losing effort, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits in 6.1 innings. Maddie Bunkoske went 2/3 at the plate with an RBI, while Mckenzie Latshaw, Mia Rzepka, Jenna Wagenschutz, and Lauren Gannon each had a hit apiece.
In Game 2: Ave Maria csored twice in the first, three times in the third, and scored their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. In the seventh, Lauren Gannon singled to center with two outs, and scored after a throwing error by the Gyrenes couldn't get Gabrielle Monreal out, but that would be the extent of the Cougar rally, and the game ended on the next at bat with a score of 7-1.
Halle Dargie suffered the loss, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Jenna Wagenschutz, Lauren Gannon, Courtney Witten, and Gabrielle Monreal all had one hit for the Cougars.
Cleary falls to 0-6 on the season, and will be back in action on Monday with a doubleheader at the Space Coast Games. They will take on Fisher College at 10:00 AM, and then play the Mighty Banyans of the New College of Florida at 12:15 PM.
