(Melbourne, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team looked to build off of Wednesday's game two performance, but ran into two difficult opponents Thursday that had other ideas, as the Cougars would suffer a pair of defeats under the lights of the Space Coast Games.
In Game 1 vs. #11 Marian: The Knights scored four runs in the first inning, and added an insurance run in the second to take a 5-0 lead over the Cougars. Cleary's best chance to score was in the top of the fourth. Mia Rzepka was hit by a pitch, and both Olivia DeJohn and Arianna Harden had infield singles to load the bases with no outs. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they were not able to get that key hit, and the Knights held the Cougars scoreless in the inning. Marian would then add three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, and got the three outs needed to win the game in the fifth by an 8-0 score.
Halle Dargie would suffer the loss pitching, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Cleary had four hits in the game coming from Lauren Gannon, Olivia DeJohn, Arianna Harden, and Sierra Diegel.
In Game 2 vs. Florida National: The Conquistadors scored on a single up the middle in the first, and added their second run on an RBI triple in the third inning. After scoring two more runs in the fifth, Cleary found themselves trailing 4-0. Olivia DeJohn would hit a one-out double in the sixth to get into scoring position, but the rally would end there with no damage done. The Cougars would end up losing the game 4-0.
Haley Ludwig would suffer the loss for the Cougars, as she allowed 4 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings pitched. Ashlyn Witt threw 2 innings of scorelss softtball in relief. Olivia DeJohn went 2/3 in the game, while Maddie Bunkoske, Sierra Diegel, and Grace MacCaughan each added one hit.
Cleary will conclude their trip to the Sunshine State on Friday, March 7, with two more games. They will play the Trinity Christian Trolls at 10:00 AM, and the Bethel Pilots at 2:30 PM.
