(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team was in action Friday afternoon at Lake Trust Stadium, as the first place Madonna Crusaders came to town for a WHAC double-header.
In Game 1: A Crusader two-run home run in the top of the first gave the visitors the early lead. Cleary would answer in the bottom of the first, when a Maddie Bunkoske double down the left field line scored Mia Rzepka from first base, cutting the deficit in half. Madonna would add five runs in the top of the second inning to take control of the game. Madonna added one run in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. Cleary would score two runs to extend the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning. After Mia Rzepka singled to the shortstop, Olivia DeJohn tripled to left field, scoring Rzepka. DeJohn would score in the next at bat after Maddie Bunkoske hit a sacrifice fly, making the score 10-3. Madonna answered in the top of the sixth inning with two runs, and Cleary was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning to end the game with a 12-3 scoreline.
Haley Ludwig suffered the loss for the Cougars, as she allowed 7 runs on 5 hits in 2 innings of work. Jade Kupsky came in relief to throw the final 4 innings of action. Cleary got five total hits, with one apiece from Mia Rzepka, Olivia DeJohn, Maddie Bunkoske, Mckenzie Latshaw, and Gabrielle Monreal.
In Game 2: Madonna scored five runs in the first, four more in the second, and a final tenth run in the third to take a 10-0 lead. The bats went cold for the Cougars in game two, as Cleary was unable to record a hit to put pressure on the Crusaders, and the game would end after the fifth inning with a 10-0 score.
Halle Dargie suffered the loss, allowing 10 runs (7 earned) in 3 innings of work. Ashlynn Witt threw 2 innings of scoreless softball.
Cleary drops to 12-18 overall, 8-6 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, April 12, when they travel to Adrian to take on the Siena Heights Saints in a WHAC double-header. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
