UNOH Races Past Women's Basketball in Fourth Quarter
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team held a lead after the first, second, and third quarters, but were unable to end up on top, as they visiting Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) Racers overtook the Cougars late Saturday evening in Lansing.
Amy Jackson started the game off with a made three pointer, and UNOH would answer with a three of their own. The two teams would struggle to get the offense going, but it would be the Cougars who saw themselves with a 10-8 lead after the opening quarter. The second quarter would see Cleary go on a 7-2 run through the first five minutes of action, as Cleary would build a 17-10 lead. A few minutes later, a pair of Taedom Stein free throws, followed by an Amy Jackson layup would give Cleary their largest lead of the game at 23-14. The Racers would fight back, and cut into the deficit, but Cleary still led 26-21 at the halftime break.
The third quarter started with a Racer run to tie and then take the lead, and the two teams would then trade baskets, but it would still be Cleary's lead at 32-21 with ten minutes to play. Amy Jackson would hit a three on the Cougars' first possession to make the score 35-31, but the Racerswould come back to tie the game just two minutes later. An Amelia Storm layup with 4:49 to play gave Cleary a 43-38 advantage, but the Racers would hold Cleary to only two points the rest of the game, as the visitors overtook Cleary and went on to win the game by a 52-45 margin.
Amy Jackson led Cleary with a game high 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Taedom Stein added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Mileisha Rodriguez would chip in 7 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars.
Cleary drops to 4-16 overall, 4-10 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back on the road on Wednesday, January 31, when they take on the Rochester Warriors in a WHAC battle. The game will start at 5:30 PM.
