(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team played their first game of the season at the friendly confines of Lake Trust Stadium, but the visiting Bethel University Pilots spoiled the party with a 4-1 victory to the visitors.
Bethel would get on the scoreboard twice in the opening half, scoring both goals in a matter of eight minutes to take a 2-0 lead. The Pilots and Cougars offense would stall for the remaining time in the half, and Bethel went into the break leading 2-0. In the second half, Bethel once again struck quickly, scoring in the 54th and 63rd minutes, taking a commanding 4-0 lead. Cleary would start to get forward, building momentum, and getting more opportunities up the field. That effort ultimately led to a corner kick for the Cougars in the 85th minute. After service into the box by Payton Zeh, the ball bounced around before landing in front of Cleary defender Emma Nobels. Nobels, who was facing away from goal at the time, kicked the ball over her head, and into the net, scoring her first goal of her collegiate career, and the first goal of the season for the Cougars. Unfortunately, Cleary was unable to mount a comeback, and the score remained 4-1 through the final horn.
Tara McGrath suffered the loss in goal, allowing 4 goals on 11 shots. Emma Nobels would score Cleary's only goal, while Jaqueline Valota added two shots on goal to lead the Cleary offense.
Cleary drops to 0-3 on the season. The Cougars will be back in action next weekend with a pair of games in Chicagoland over the Labor Day holiday. The team will play at Governors State on Saturday, at 4:00 PM EDT, and will play at Roosevelt on Monday at 1:00 PM.
