(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team returned to the friendly confines of Lake Trust Stadium and earned their first victory of the 2023 season Saturday afternoon.
Cleary would get on the board just under 15 minutes into the game when a ball deflected to the feet of Taylor Franco, who slotted the ball into the goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Payton Zeh doubled that lead 20 minutes later, when Maripaz Quiros sent a beautiful through ball in behind the defense, setting Zeh up for a 1 vs. the goalie, and Zeh won the matchup. Cleary would go into the halftime break by that 2-0 scoreline.
In the second half, Cleary earned a corner kick in the 68th minute. Summer Morrill would take it, and her pass found the head of Emma Nobels, who scored her second goal of the season. Even with Cleary pushing numbers forward, the Cougars were unable to score any more goals, and the game would end with a 3-0 final score.
Tara McGrath picked up her first win of the season, splitting the shutout with teammate Juliana Caro. The tandem combined for 5 saves. Cleary outshot Ohio Christian 38-7 in the game, and held the shots on goal advantage by 19-5. The Cougars also earned 12 corner kicks to OCU's 2.
The win gives Cleary a 1-5 record on the season. The Cougars will be back in action next Saturday, September 16, when they host the Manchester University Spartans at Lake Trust Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 PM EDT.
