(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team was held in check Wednesday evening, as they fell to the visiting Concordia Cardinals by a 3-0 score at Lake Trust Stadium.
Cleary started off on the right foot, controlling much of the tempo and possession in the Concordia half of the field. Things would change in CUAA's favor in the 11th minute after the Cougars committed a foul. Concordia's free kick deflected off a Cougar head, and then found the foot of a Cardinal, who placed it past goalie Tara McGrath to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 34th minute, after a throw in caught the Cougars flat-footed, and Concordia was able to beat McGrath again for a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Cleary's Shayne Krystyniak committed her second yellow card foul of the game, and was given a red card, so the Cougars would play the final 25 minutes down a player. To pour salt on their wounds, Cleary committed a handball foul in the penalty area in the 82nd minute, and the Cardinals converted the ensuing penalty kick.
Tara McGrath suffered the loss in goal, making 4 saves on 7 shots. Concordia outshot Cleary 13-9 (7-3 on goal). Concordia held the corner kick advantage by a 6-3 margin, and the Cardinals committed 12 fouls to Cleary's 11.
Cleary drops to 2-9 overall, 0-4 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, October 7, when they travel to take on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
