(Dearborn Hts, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team opened up the game's scoring, but ultimately fell to the host UM-Dearborn Wolverines 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Dearborn Heights.
Cleary would start the game off strong, and scored in just the 4th minute, as Taylor Franco was freed up the left hand side, centered a cross, and found the head of Cristina de Miguel to put the Cougars up 1-0. The Wolverines would respond after the goal, and grew into the game, and were able to break down the Cougar defense in the 28th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Cleary's defense held firm the rest of the half, as neither team was able to break through.
Cleary made the appropriate adjustments at halftime, and once again controlled much of the game in the second half, putting pressure on the Wolverine defense, but unable to find the necessary go-ahead goal. That would prove costly, as UM-Dearborn got their big break in the 81st minute after a defensive breakdown left a wide open Wolverine alone at the back post to beat goalie Tara McGrath. Cleary would be unable to find the equalizer, and fell by a 2-1 final scoreline.
Tara McGrath would take the loss in goal, making 11 saves on 13 shots on goal. Cristina de Miguel's goal was her first of the season.
UM-Dearborn held the advantage on shots at 21-4 (13-2 on goal), corner kicks (5-1), and fouls (11-8).
Cleary drops to 2-10 overall, 0-5 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday, October 11, when they travel to Lima, Ohio to take on the UNOH Racers. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM.
