(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team were forced to deal with rain and slick field conditions, as they welcomed the Lourdes Gray Wolves to Lake Trust Stadium Wednesday evening.
The rain caused many errant passes and skipped balls, as both teams struggled to get their footing in the game. Lourdes would get on the scoreboard late in the first half, when a routine cross took an unfortunate deflection off a Cleary defender, and went past goalie Tara McGrath to make the game 1-0 to the visitors.
In the second half, Cleary earned a corner kick in the 54th minute, and Payton Zeh delivered a beauty of a ball to the back post that found Ambre Canado, who headed it home to score her first collegiate goal. Unfortunately for Cleary, Lourdes answered right back just forty seconds later, scoring the game-winning goal on a shot that certainly felt the effects of the wet conditions, as the ball slipped out of Tara McGrath's hands and crossed the line. Cleary pushed forward, and had their chances, including a shot on goal right before the clock struck zero, but were unable to tie the game.
Tara McGrath made 4 saves on 6 shots in a losing effort. Lourdes outshot Cleary 16-8 (6-3 on goal). Lourdes held a 9-6 advantage on corner kicks, and the two teams combined for 23 fouls in the game.
Cleary drops to 2-15 overall, 0-10 in the WHAC. The Cougars will conclude their regular season on Saturday, October 28 when they welcome the Siena Heights Saints to Lake Trust Stadium for Senior Day. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM, and the seniors will be recognized before kickoff.
