(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team played valiantly, but ultimately fell just short, as they fell to the Siena Heights Saints at Lake Trust Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw over the first 45 minutes, and Cleary picked up their intensity, started creating some chances, and pushing forward as they went for the winning goal. After a Cristina de Miguel shot and save, the Saints countered and got behind the Cougar defense, beating a defender and slotting the game's first hole from near the touchline past goalie Tara McGrath.
Still searching for the equalizer, Cleary's chances were dashed in the 88th minute, when a handball was called against the Cougars in the penalty area, and the Saints converted the ensuing kick to take a 2-0 lead. The Cougars did not give up, and after winning a corner kick in the final 10 seconds, Payton Zeh delivered a perfect pass to the back post to find Jaqueline Valota's head for the Cougars' first goal of the game.
Tara McGrath would suffer the loss in goal, making 8 saves on 9 shots. Juliana Caro made 1 save on 2 shots faced.
Cleary was outshot 31-6 (11-4 on target). The Saints also held a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Cleary finishes the season 2-16, 0-11 in the WHAC.
